About Metadata Remover

Metadata Remover is a photo privacy tool in two forms: the checker on this website, which inspects and cleans a JPEG, PNG or WebP inside your browser, and an app for iPhone and Android that does the same for the photos in your library. Both exist for one job: to let you see what a photo reveals about where and when it was taken and what device took it, and to hand you a clean copy before you send it.

The app is published by Mobile Card Games & Travel Apps LLC, a small independent studio that builds single-purpose utilities for iPhone and Android. Metadata Remover first shipped on the App Store in December 2024 and on Google Play in 2026. There is no venture backing and no advertising business behind it; the app is free to use, with a one-time Pro purchase for batch cleaning and replacing originals.

The page loads a small script. When you choose a file, that script reads it in memory, walks the JPEG segments, PNG chunks or WebP chunks, and reports which categories of metadata it finds. Cleaning writes a new file from the same bytes minus the EXIF, XMP, IPTC and comment blocks, keeps the colour profile and the orientation flag, and offers it as a download. No request is made to any server with the file, its name or its contents, and the tool works with the network switched off once the page has loaded. The exact behaviour per format is documented on the home page.

On the website: cookie-free, aggregate page-view statistics, so we know which guides are read. Never the photo, its filename or anything found inside it. In the app: no account, no advertising, no analytics; purchases go through Apple or Google. The privacy policy describes both in full, including the third parties involved in processing purchases.

The guides on this site describe two things. The first is the behaviour of the checker, which we wrote and can state exactly, format by format. The second is how operating systems and messaging apps treat a photo's metadata, drawn from the platforms' own documentation and from published tests, and written so that you can confirm every claim yourself: send a photo, save what arrives, and drop it into the checker. Each guide carries the date it was last checked. Apps change how they treat attachments, so if a guide no longer matches what you see, tell us and we will re-check it.
